AAWT Day 20: Thredbo Zero Day (0km today)

It was so good to curl up under cotton sheets in a real bed last night, instead if the synthetic material of a hiking quilt wearing a puffy jacket like I had been for the past 3 weeks. I slept like a log.

A sleep in was called for as the bakery wouldn’t open until 7:30am and that is where I was headed for breaky. I hate cooking meals when in trail towns and will go out of my way to find where I can get someone else to do if for me. Of course its a ski village and everything is so expensive but you just have to cop it.

It’s another perfect day, almost too good to be lazing about resting instead of making the most of the fine conditions to get more miles in on trail but really is the perfect weather to be relaxing in.

I resupplied for the next 4 day section from the small IGA in town, the most expensive resupply I reckon I’ve ever done at about $145, for 4 days food. Options were limited but I found enough to get me through. It would have been possible to hitch out to Jindabyne for greater options and cheaper prices but I couldn’t be bothered mucking around. It would have felt like work, not relaxation.

Next I had laundry to do. With the Telstra network still out of action along with the washing machines it would be hand wash. At least the perfect weather will allow for fast drying in the sun. I then had the dilemma of how to wash absolutely everything while waiting the long hours for stuff to dry after (driers were outvin addition to washing machines). It was too warm a day to be hanging out in rain gear all day as I usually would.

Luckily the trail provides. Like many YHA’s there is a basket of free clothes that previous travellers have left behind. Scouring through it, there isn’t a lot of choice but I find enough for me to pinch and wear through the day with everything else in the wash. I find a preppy pair of men’s salmon coloured shorts in my size and a large women’s light blue tshirt, the only other option being a size 10 pink shirt I was definitely not squeezing into. The cut of the shirt was atrocious. Stylish for sure but I’m a hiker and could not care less what I look like for a day in a town no one will remember me in. It was actually a fun reminder of what I would typically do on wash days on larger trails overseas – that being to find the nearest thrift store and purchase some clothes to where while in town.

The rest of the day was all about relaxing, trying to stay off my feet (difficult to do in Thredbo where a commute anywhere requires multiple flights of stairs), and updating my blog to keep you all entertained. At least I hope its entertaining. Back to the Kosi Bar for some beers.

  1. Great blog as usual Mick. Enjoy the Thredbo R&R. I absolutely agree about the horses (and deer, but mainly the horses). They’re wrecking the joint and just shouldn’t be there. I’ve read that aerial culling has resumed but I’d like to see the evidence. Enjoy the trail to the end, stay warm and may the weather stay kind. Cheers, Ross
